RYA Day Skipper Course Content
Put your theory into practice and learn to skipper a yacht in familiar waters by day. Learn to leave and return from your berth safely, anchoring, picking up a mooring buoy, recover a man over board, navigation, and safety on board a yacht. Hone your sailing skills, experience sailing at night and enjoy sailing to a different port each evening.
We run the RYA Day Skipper course as a 7 day extended course, mid week 5-day course or over a 2-day weekend and a 3-day weekend from our base in Hamble. Enjoy sailing the sheltered waters of the Solent during your course. Our Extended 7 day course allows additional time to complete your course and visit ports and harbours further afield than you might do during a 5 day course.
Useful literatureThe RYA Day Skipper Practical Course Notes is a useful book both during the course and as an aide memoire after your course, and can be purchased for £10 – please let us know if you would like to order a copy when you are booking your course. We also have a section on sail handling that contains some worksheets you might find useful.
We have a list of other sailing books you might find interesting.

After your course
You will be able to skipper a small yacht by day in familiar waters. Upon successful completion of the RYA Day Skipper course you will have gained a recognised qualification which is accepted in a number of countries as confirmation of your competence to charter a boat.
If you are planning to charter with your RYA Day Skipper certificate we would recommend checking with your charter company to ensure that they accept the RYA Day Skipper certificate as evidence of competence. Some charter companies may insist on a ICC (International Certificate of Competency). If this is the case, your RYA Day Skipper certificate can be used to gain the ICC. Please visit our ICC page to download the ICC application form.
If you haven't chartered a boat before have a look at our Chartering a yacht for the first time blog post for useful information on the charter process – from helping you to choose a yacht to what should be included in charter handover.
