RYA VHF Course
The RYA VHF course is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio.
This online course includes a RYA VHF handbook and will fully prepare you for your RYA VHF exam.
Equinox Sailing are accredited to conduct the RYA VHF exam. We hold monthly exams at our office in Central London.
RYA VHF Course Content
- The basics of radio operation
- The correct frequencies (channels) to be used
- Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
- Making ship to shore telephone calls
- Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
- Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
- Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
- Search and Rescue (SART)

A VHF radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures for its use. This course takes you through basic operations of a VHF radio and prepares you for your final exam. Once purchased you own are able to use the course as a useful refresher and it comes complete with a VHF simulator.

Duration 7–10 hours
An additional fee of £60 is payable directly to the RYA for the exam and licence fee.
