Fresh food offshore
When sailing offshore you cannot get fresh food every couple of days. There are many solutions to keeping up the intake of vegetables and their roughage, taste, vitamins and minerals – these include tinned vegetables, frozen (if have a freezers on-board, pickled/preserved in vinegar/salt (can be done at home and if using lighter vinegars – such as rice wine – can be easy on the tongue), or you can sprout your own seeds and eat the seedling.
In the photo you can see a sprouting jar with a porous lid through which water can be poured and drained twice a day. A half ounce of seeds will produce a jar full of sprouted seedlings in 4 days. The jar is glass – so won’t bounce – but a couple of jars can make for some important variety of taste and nutrition off shore.
