RYA Day Skipper
RYA Day Skipper Course Content
Becoming a skipper is a challenge. Managing your crew, planning your passage and making the correct decisions become easier with practice. By taking your RYA Day Skipper practical course you can learn the skills necessary to skipper a yacht by day in familiar waters.
For a more detailed look at the course please have a look at Is the RYA Day Skipper course right for me?
Put your theory into practice and learn to skipper a yacht in familiar waters by day. Learn to leave and return from your berth safely, anchoring, picking up a mooring buoy, recover a man over board, navigation, and safety on board a yacht. Hone your sailing skills, experience sailing at night and enjoy sailing to a different port each evening.
We run the RYA Day Skipper course as a mid week 5-day course or over a 2 and 3-day weekend from our base in Hamble. Enjoy sailing the sheltered waters of the Solent during your 5 days.
The RYA Day Skipper course notes is a useful book both during the course and as an aid memoir after you have completed your course. The course notes can be purchased for £10- please let us know if you would like to order a copy when you are booking your course.
We have a list of other sailing books you might find interesting and we also have a section of our website dedicated to sail handling, which contains some worksheets you might find useful.
We now have a set of RYA Theory Course tuition videos and RYA Day Skipper worksheets to accompany our courses.
After your course
You will be able to skipper a small yacht by day in familiar waters. Upon successful completion of the RYA Day Skipper course you will have gained a recognised qualification which is accepted in a number of countries as confirmation of your competence to charter a boat.
If you are planning to charter with your RYA Day Skipper certificate we would recommend checking with your charter company to ensure that they accept the RYA Day Skipper certificate as evidence of competence. Some charter companies my insist on an ICC (International Certificate of Competency). If this is the case your RYA Day Skipper certificate can be used to gain the ICC. Please visit our ICC page to download the ICC application form.
If you haven’t chartered a boat before have a look at our ‘Chartering a yacht for the first time’ blog for useful information on the charter process- from helping you to choose a yacht to what should be included in charter handover.
