Is the RYA Day Skipper theory course right for me?

The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship for Competent Crew who are interested in becoming a skipper.  Although not essential to complete your RYA Day Skipper Practical course, you will find this course invaluable if you wish to start making decisions on board a boat.

Let’s go through what you’ll be learning:

During your RYA Day Skipper Theory course you will learn the basics of pilotage, navigation and seamanship. Learn what the parts of a boat are called and become familiar with general nautical terminology.

Being safe on a boat is very important and during your RYA Day Skipper Theory course you will learn what safety equipment should be carried on board, fire precautions and fire fighting, the use of personal safety equipment, how to send a mayday, and basic knowledge of rescue procedures.

Knowing who is ‘stand on’ and who is the ‘give way’ vessel in a meeting situation at sea is important for any skipper, so during your RYA Day Skipper Theory course you will learn the principles of IRPCS (International Regulation for Preventing Collisions at Sea) and what action should be taken to avoid them.

A large part your RYA Day Skipper Theory course will be learning navigational skills, both traditional paper and modern GPS skills. Learn to identify and use important navigational aids to plot your position so you know the boat is in safe water and out of danger.  Learn how to calculate the height of tide to allow you to explore shallow creeks or harbours.  Learn how to use the tidal streams to help you arrive at your destination a little quicker.

Rope work is an important skill for any sailor and during your RYA Day Skipper Theory course you will learn some basic knots and the properties of ropes and their uses.

Learn the importance of getting up to date weather forecasts, whether it’s getting up early for the shipping forecast, downloading it to your phone, or checking the marina office.  Learn to make to most of the weather and plan your trips to take advantage of the weather now and later.

The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is the first step to becoming a skipper; by the end of the course you should have the theoretical knowledge needed to skipper a boat in familiar waters by day.  Now it’s time to put it into practice by completing your RYA Day Skipper Practical course.
