Is the RYA Competent Crew practical course right for me?

Are you interested in learning to sail but don’t know where to start?  We will look at the RYA Competent Crew practical course in more detail to see if it is right for you.  Equinox Sailing runs RYA Competent Crew practical courses throughout the year and help students gain confidence on the water as well as learning to sail.

The RYA Competent Crew practical course is a great way to learn to sail, and experience living on a boat over 5 days.

Let’s go through what you’ll be learning:

During your RYA Competent Crew practical course you will learn the basics of sailing a boat and becoming a competent member of crew.  The RYA Competent Crew practical course is a live aboard course, experience eating and sleeping, aboard our 38ft Sigma 38 “Rho”.

Being safe on a boat is very important, and during your RYA Competent Crew course you will learn how to be safe on a boat – fire prevention, the use on a lifejacket, safety harness, and what action should be taken if there is a man overboard, and how to recover them.  Learn how to use flares and how to launch and board a liferaft.

During your RYA Competent Crew practical course you will gain a sufficient knowledge of sea terms and the parts of a modern sailing yacht to enable you to understand the day to day running of a boat.

Learn how to prepare the boat to enter and leave a marina, how to prepare the boat to anchor for lunch, and how to pick up a mooring buoy.

You will learn how to hoist and lower the main sail and the jib, how to reef the main sail.  Learn how to safely handle sheets and halyards by using winches and clutches. And start to develop the skills need to trim the sails for different points of sail.

As we sail form port to port you will get to the opportunity to sail a boat on all points of sail and learn how to tack and gybe a boat safely while learning to steer and holding a course using a compass.  You will learn what calls we use to allow the crew to know what is happening.

Rope work is an important skill for any sailor and during your RYA Competent Crew practical course you will learn how to coil and stow ropes, and learn to tie some practical knots and put them into practice, tying on fenders, using cleats to secure a mooring line and securing the sheets to the sails.

During your week on Rho you will learn how to identify if there is a risk of collision with another boat and what action should be taken to avoid it.

Join the boat on Monday morning; meet your instructor and crew, after a safety briefing, set off for a week on the water.  Enjoy learning to anchor for lunch, or picking up a mooring buoy, and exploring the harbours and marines of the south coast before returning Friday afternoon.

The RYA Competent Crew practical course is clear evidence to other skippers and crew that you have basic knowledge.
To progress Equinox Sailing will be able to teach you more about sail trim; boat handling; flying spinnaker

Once you have these under your belt skippers will want to have you aboard. Watch our short video shot during an RYA Competent Crew Course.

The RYA Competent Crew practical course is the foundation RYA practical sailing course why not continue the RYA qualifications and complete the RYA Day Skipper Theory course.  Just want to get out on the water then why not join us for a weekend cruise.
