Before booking your RYA VHF Exam students should have completed an online RYA course and passed the pre exam course knowledge check or have attended a classroom course and obtained a signature from your course instructor.

Candidates may be of any Nationality or residency, although the exam will be conducted in English. The minimum age for examination is 16 years old on the day of the exam.

You will need to bring your original application form either signed by your course instructor or your orginal online course certificate with a passport photograph and payment of £60.  Payment can be made by cheque, debit or credit card, cheques should be made payable to the RYA.  You will not be able to sit your exam unless payment is made.  A partial resit can be taken for up to 6 weeks at an additional cost of £15, after this time you would have to rebook your whole exam.

The RYA VHF Exam will include a practical and theory exam.  Students will be given 20-30 minutes to familiarise themselves with the radio simulators.

Practical Exam
The practical exam will be based on scenarios given to you by your assessor and should take around 30 minutes, these will include.

Distress Situations
Be able to identify a distress situation.
Be able to initiate a DSC distress alert, with position and time input manually or automatically.
Send a distress call and message by voice.
Respond to a distress alert, call and message, including relay of a distress message.
Know the procedure for cancelling a DSC distress alert sent in error.

Urgency Situations
Be able to identify a urgency situation
Be able to initiate a DSC urgency alert
Send and urgency message by voice.
Respond to an urgency message.

Safety Situations
Be able to identify a situation in which a safety message is appropriate
Be able to initiate a DSC safety alert

Routine Communications
Be able to initiate a routine call using DSC, and select an appropriate working channel
Establish communications and exchange messages with other stations by voice.
Enter a group or individual MMSI number
Use the international Phonetic Alphabet.

In addition students should be aware of the following
How to deploy and EPIRB and SART
Know how to test a VHF radio by use of a radio check
How to maintain an appropriate watch on DSC and working channels

Theory Paper
The theory paper is a 30 minute closed book exam, if it has been sometime since you completed your course, it is advised that you spend sometime refreshing your memory.
