RYA Competent Crew Course Content

Experience living on a yacht and visit different ports each night. Learn the fundamentals of handling a boat under sail and under engine. Learn to handle sails, tie knots, and become a useful member of crew.

Join the boat on Monday morning meet your instructor and crew, after a safety briefing set off returning Friday afternoon.

Useful literature

The RYA Competent Crew course notes, is a useful book both during the course and as an aid memoir after your course, and can be purchased for £10 please let us know when you are booking.  We also have a section on sail handling that contains some worksheets you might find useful.

Book your RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship course for £50 instead of £99

After your course

You will have an understanding of sailing and how to be a useful member or crew, gaining a recognised certificate.

Previous experience required None

Duration 5 days over 2 weekends
Max instructor ratio 5:1

Channel Islands and Brittany Rose Granite Coast cruise @ RYA Competent Crew

Join us to put your new founds skills into practice and complete the RYA Competent Crew or Day Skipper course over 7 days. The 7-days will provide the opportunity to explore new sea areas and get some proper sailing experience.

The course will start in Hamble, cross the Channel to the Islands and along the spectacular granite coastline of Brittany, before ending in St Malo.

Heavy weather options would explore west along the coast to Devon and possibly across the Channel during the weekThe trip is also available to those who wish to cruise, and not complete the RYA course.

The cost includes meals while sailing and mooring fees. It does not include meals ashore or return travel from St Malo.

Jurassic Coast and Riviera cruise, a 7-day RYA course @ RYA Day Skipper

A cruise and an opportunity to complete a RYA course along the West Dorset coast, Lulworth, Durdle Door, Portland, Lyme Regis, Brixham, Dartmouth.

Completing the RYA course over 7 days provides the opportunity to get some sailing experience and put skills learnt into practice.The cost includes meals while sailing and mooring fees, it does not include meals ashore. Return travel from Dartmouth is also not included.

The trip will appeal to photographers and amateur geologists.

RYA Day Skipper Course Content
Put your theory into practice and learn to skipper a yacht in familiar waters by day. Learn to leave and return from your berth safely, anchoring, picking up a mooring buoy, recover a man over board, navigation, and safety on board a yacht. Hone your sailing skills, experience sailing at night and enjoy sailing to a different port each evening.

Join the boat on Monday morning meet your instructor and crew, after a safety briefing set off returning Friday afternoon.
