New to sailing, spent some time on a yacht and don’t know your bow line from your bowline? Then this could be the course for you. The RYA Competent Crew course is an ideal introduction for those new to sailing or dinghy sailors who wish to progress into the RYA Cruising scheme.

RYA Competent Crew Course Content

Experience living on a yacht and visit different ports each night. Learn the fundamentals of handling a boat under sail and under engine. Learn to handle sails, tie knots, and become a useful member of crew.

Join the boat on the first day, meet your instructor and crew, and after a safety briefing set off returning on the last day.

Useful literature

The RYA Competent Crew Skills is a useful book both during the course and as an aide memoire after your course, and can be purchased for £10 please let us know when you are booking.  We also have a section on sail handling that contains some worksheets you might find useful.

Book your RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship course for £50 instead of £99.

After your course

You will have an understanding of sailing and how to be a useful member or crew, gaining a recognised certificate.

Have you recently completed your RYA Competent Crew course, and would like to gain some more experience before attending your RYA Day Skipper practical? Perhaps you attended your RYA Competent Crew course a few years ago and need to refresh your skill? The Equinox Competent Crew Plus course could just be what you're looking for.

Equinox Competent Crew Plus Course Content

Spend a weekend refreshing your RYA Competent Crew skills with a qualified RYA Instructor. If you are looking to bridge the gap between RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper then learn some new skills:

  • Piloting in and out of harbours
  • Anchoring under engine
  • Picking up a mooring buoy under engine
  • Basic berthing and un-berthing.

Join the boat on Friday evening and meet your instructor and crew, start your course on Saturday morning, returning Sunday afternoon.

Channel Islands and Brittany Rose Granite Coast cruise @ RYA Competent Crew

Join us to put your new found skills into practice and complete the RYA Competent Crew or Day Skipper course over 7 days. The 7-days will provide the opportunity to explore new sea areas and get some proper sailing experience.

The course will start in Hamble, cross the Channel to the Islands and along the spectacular granite coastline of Brittany, before returning to Hamble.

Heavy weather options would explore west along the coast to Devon and possibly across the Channel during the weekThe trip is also available to those who wish to cruise, and not complete the RYA course.

The cost includes meals while sailing and mooring fees – there are no hidden costs but you expected to cover the costs of any meals ashore.
