Mile Builder’s 2014

So you have your RYA Day Skipper but want to gain more sailing experience?

For many people becoming an RYA day skipper has been long term goal as it opens the door to being able to charter a boat and perhaps take friends or family sailing in the UK or the Med.  For some, sailing in the sheltered waters on the Solent is enough, but many sailors set their sights further afield, a long weekend to France, or perhaps the Channel Islands.

Sailing out of sight of land for the first time can be an exhilarating but daunting experience.  It is important that you know what to expect and how to react and cope if the weather turns out to be less than favourable. We can all set limitations on our sailing, but to develop as a skipper we must experience less than ideal conditions, push ourselves out of our comfort zones.

Organised mile builders are a great way to clock up lots of experience while sailing out of sight of land and being in a watch system.  In some conditions, making a cup of tea while sailing can be challenging and it is useful to experience these conditions, as well as sleeping on a boat out of port, during an organised trip.  Your skipper instructor will oversee the trip, allowing you to plan the passage and gain valuable experience of passage making and tidal gates, planning for the weather forecast and what to do when the forecast doesn’t turn out as expected.

Equinox Sailing has a number of mile builders planned for 2014.

Ireland Mile Builder, a 2 week cruise along the infamous Fastnet Race route. The trip can be split in two, joining or finishing in Ireland allowing a one week cruise.  For more details please visit our mile building page on our website.

Wales Mile Builder, a nonstop one-way trip along the South Coast and across the Bristol Channel finishing in South Wales.  We expect the trip to take approximately 3 days.  Contact us for more details.

Scotland Mile Builder, sailing from Oban to Holyhead for a brief stop-over before rounding Lands’ End and along the South Coast back to Hamble.  We expect the trip to take approximately 7 days.  Contact us for more details
