Mile Builders

Interested in attending a Mile Builder next summer?  Find out what’s involved

Mile builders are longer passages, often including overnight passages, which are suitable for sailors looking to build their experience and gain some ‘sea miles’ to join the crew.  Often specifically organised trips or delivery trips moving a boat from one location to another, mile builders are useful for those working towards their RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore and a great way to meet new people.

Most mile builders aim to be longer that 60 miles, this allows the crew to get into a watch system and experience living onboard a yacht on passage.  However some passages could be 120-180 miles ensuring that you experience sleeping and eating while underway.

If you sail on the South Coast or in the Solent then you will be aware that France is only a 12 hour passage away, however being out of sight of land for the first time can be a daunting experience.  For many they will have done this trip before as crew but need a little guidance to do it as skipper.

Organised mile builders are skippered by an experience RYA Instructor/Skipper, so although not an RYA course you will get the benefit of an experienced Instructor to help you plan and run your passage.

Equinox Sailing has a number of mile builders planned for 2014.

The Equinox ‘Fastnet Rally’. A 2 week cruise along the infamous Fastnet Race route. The trip can be split in two, joining or finishing in Ireland allowing a one week cruise.  For more details please visit our Fastnet 2014 Rally page on our website.
