In the 2012 3 Peaks Yacht Race Rho was beaten into second place in the Tilman Trophy, and third overall by Quickstep, skippered by Nick Bubb. Three times during the 3PYR Nick and his crew clawed back leads that Rho had pulled out with some outstanding sailing and some quite handy times on the mountains.
Nick is now about to face probably the biggest challenge of his life – Skippering the re-enactment of Ernest Shackleton’s outstanding rescue mission, sailing from Elephant Island across the Southern Ocean 800 miles to South Georgia then climbing across the Island to the Grytviken whaling station. The Shackleton Epic re-enactment marks the centenary of the Shackleton expedition and will use only original technology, equipment and food, sailing a replica of the James Caird the 22.5 foot lifeboat from the Endurance. That means no GPS to navigate, just proper astral navigation; no Goretex waterproofs, no modern foods, stoves etc. This expedition really is a paying homage to Shackleton’s brilliant leadership and determination that ultimately saved every man back on Elephant Island; one of the greatest groups of Britons of all time.
The Nick and his colleagues in the Shackleton Epic team are currently in southern Chili finalising their preparations – they aim to start in a week or so – you can follow their progress at http://shackletonepic.com
