Coastal Skipper Practical

The Coastal Skipper Practical course is the key course for experienced sailors looking to build on their sailing knowledge and qualifications. This is a serious course, near the top of the RYA Yachting qualifications, after Coastal Skipper you could complete the RYA Yachtmaster and progress onto the MCA professional and commercial qualifications. There are pre-requisites necessary to enrol on the Coastal Skipper Practical course – you will need the “Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster” theory course, have at least 15 Days sailing (2 days as skipper) experience and covered at least 300 miles including 8 night hours.

On the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster theory you will cover the theory of tides, weather and aspects of safely skippering a yacht or motorboat, covering much more detail that the Day Skipper theory and practical courses. Whilst covering electronic navigation all the theory is also learnt so that you can navigate competently even if all the boats electronics become un-serviceable.

The Coastal Skipper Practical will help you to build on the theory and use your experience to prepare and then practice skippering coastal passages, including navigation at night and in restricted visibility. The course will develop your boat handling skills in preparation for challenging conditions and adverse weather, including such treats as recovering a man over board when under sail.

Equinox Sailing offers the Coastal Skipper Practical as a 5 day long live-aboard course that starts on a Monday and ends on a Friday with a maximum ratio of 4 pupils to 1 instructor to ensure that everyone gets the right level of support and tuition throughout. The course costs £475 and includes all instruction, accommodation and living on-board for the week. Meals ashore and mooring fees, which are split between the students, are not included.
